I love this family...I loved this session...I love these girls! They are SO precious...and so is their mama BTW.
Tammy makes me belly laugh at least every day; our humor is creepily parallel; and our duel love of everything 80s is like karma...so I couldn't say no to someone who is OBVIOUSLY so cool! Thank goodness that I think her kids like me now too...cause I would sure be dissappointed if I didn't get to see my little peeps again! (PS - Dad, you're pretty awesome too.) I had a fabulous time with each and every one of you!

I met the beautiful Ault family in Highland Park this morning for their family session...and I am SO STOKED that the azaleas were in full bloom for their special day! If you haven't made the drive through...take the time...they're only in bloom for about 2 weeks and then they're gone for another year...so get going!

The first thing Emma said when she saw these images today was..."That's my little Ashlynn! I love her!" :)
I hope you guys like the pics as much as Emma and I do, cause we think you're the bomb...and such an oh so cute and sweet family! Thanks for the awesome session!

{ small }

I've been thinking about this particular blog post for a few days, but it all came together last night when I discovered this...

I'm sure it's hard to tell from this image...but it's a baby cardinal tucked away in our jasmine...tiny, fragile and exposed. Mom and dad were out scouring up some good grub this morning...so I tried to carefully snap a couple...before I was dive bombed like a P-40 in 1942...which resulted in injury (to me and the chair I USED to be standing in)...which also resulted in disinfectant, Neosporin and Nemo band aids...and now a limp...which I’d like to keep on the DL...especially when it comes to my husband! (J, just in case your reading this...yes, the camera and lens are fine...I checked!) Dang, what I won't do for a picture - thank goodness I don't work for National Geographic; my liability would be GINORMOUS! :)

Anyhoo...over the last 2 weeks I have been gently and humbly reminded of how small I am. Not physically...especially after baby number 2, and definitely not as small as I wanna be. But how I sometimes jump to conclusions, assume the worst in others or ignore my God-given sense of shut up instinct and in the end…feel small. I think it's God's way of reminding me that I am not the all-powerful, super-human, awesome mama control goddess that I think I am - and that's a GOOD thing!

For instance, last week I kept telling my daughter..."Come on, Em, hurry up, we have to go, let's go, get moving...I don't want to hear it, we're late!" In a small, sad little voice she finally said, "But mama, I can't find my shoes." If I had just stopped to listen. Small...

Or when I've assumed that my husband means something terrible by "You're gonna wear that?"...when in actuality he means, "You can't wear that, cause now you look better than me!" :) Instead of asking what he meant, I assumed he meant the worst, when he was really giving me a compliment! Small...

Or when I kept worrying over a situation for days (OK, months)...and when I was praying for just a Pinto and He gave me a BMW...I'm suddenly stunned! Why should I be surprised? God is bigger than my worry, but when I prayed, did I really believe what I was praying for or to WHOM I was praying? Small...

So now I am faced with the challenging reality of praising God for those times when I am reminded of my smallness. I have to learn to raise my glass with gusto to all of those times when I am humbled, or when frankly, I am cut off at the knees...or pushed off my chair by a ticked off mama cardinal!

2 Corinthians 12:10 (The Message)
7-10Because of the extravagance of those revelations, and so I wouldn't get a big head, I was given the gift of a handicap to keep me in constant touch with my limitations. Satan's angel did his best to get me down; what he in fact did was push me to my knees. No danger then of walking around high and mighty! At first I didn't think of it as a gift, and begged God to remove it. Three times I did that, and then he told me, My grace is enough; it's all you need. My strength comes into its own in your weakness.

Once I heard that, I was glad to let it happen. I quit focusing on the handicap and began appreciating the gift. It was a case of Christ's strength moving in on my weakness. Now I take limitations in stride, and with good cheer, these limitations that cut me down to size—abuse, accidents, opposition, bad breaks. I just let Christ take over! And so the weaker I get, the stronger I become.

Yep - limitations, mistakes, assumptions, a big mouth and a big head are not fun things to learn, but it reminds me that because of Christ, my weaknesses make me strong. Because of His grace, I'm forgiven...thank goodness! Because of His mercy...I don't get what I REALLY deserve!

And thanks to all of you...family, friends, clients, strangers...for recognizing my weaknesses and giving me a chance anyway to share my talent...for then I am strong!

I had the wonderful opportunity to work with Michelle and her mom on Saturday for her uber photogenic Senior session. I love it when seniors come with ideas aready formed about how they'd like their session to go...what they want to do...how they want to look...and are willing to do just about anything to make it happen...even humoring this photographer...AND including walking 100s of yards across a bridge to hang from tressels...:)

{ Ryder - 6 Months }

It's a busy weekend, so to keep up I'm posting previews as I go...here's number 3!

Ryder is another little boy I've seen since he was just a few days old, and I can't believe it's already his 6 month session...times flies...but OH, the cuter they get! I could just melt for those big brown eyes and adorable 2-tooth grin! What a beautiful morning session with little Ryder...

And the last picture is just to prove that it isn't always rainbows and puppies at every session! It makes me giggle, but after only 2 pictures of tears, we have a hundred of smiles...he warmed up to perfection! :)

It's so much fun to watch those little babies I get to see at just a few days old grow into little people! Luke is one of those...and I just love his personality. He is DEFINITELY all boy, with a capital B! :)

And with a little brother on the way, mama's gonna have her hands full...with a capital F too! But I bet mom and dad wouldn't trade this little boy for the whole world! :)

I can't WAIT to watch the next McClure boy grow into as handsome a young man as Mr Luke...the first image is my FAV - hands down! D

I say that because just as our session started it came a gully-washer...as my Mummer used to say...:) But these sweet, fun and daring people graciously accepted the weather challenge for their family pictures.

And, when everything calmed down, the daylight was beautiful and all of the colors were so bright and pretty...this actually turned out to be one of my favorite spring sessions so far...and I'm SURE it didn't have ANYthing to do with this georgous little girl! ;) I had a great time, and I hope we all meet again soon!

{ balancing is an act }

You ever meet those people that you think, "MAN, I wish I was her; she really has it all together - the cute house, awesome husband, great kids dressed in boutique clothes, gourmet meal on the table and perfectly sun-kissed skin...blah, blah, blah"

OK, nothing against those people, but that ain’t me. Someone said to me the other day, "Man, you sure are handling everything really well - 2 jobs, commuting over 3 hours a day, 2 beautiful kids, a husband AND keeping up with Facebook and a new business...":) Well, I’m here to let you know that I wear A LOT of concealer under these eyes, cause along with a lack of sleep and serious caffeine addiction lately, I certainly don’t feel that way. I struggle every single day with this thing called ‘balance’. Life, home, kids, husband, exercise, planning birthday parties, my DVR’d shows...hehehe

So this weekend is my personal rejuvenation! Yes, I have 4 sessions. Yes, I have eggs to paint. Yes, my hardwood floors look like I’ve been sawing wood in my house. Yes, I’d like to actually like to sit down and shave my legs and paint my toes or pull weeds in our garden. But you know what...it’s also Easter.

We were at the pediatrician yesterday since Miss Audrey decided to carry on the Perkins tradition of a record number of ear infections BEFORE the age of 1, and little Emma tagged along. Before we left, Dr Joslin – who ROCKS BTW – asked Emma about her Easter. Oooooohhhh, she mentioned eggs, her new dress and candy, but when Dr J asked her what was Easter really about, she stretched out her little arms and said “It’s about Jesus! He died and then He came back to life!” There was such excitement and joy in her voice. It was one of the proudest Mama Moments I’ve ever had...To know that my child, one of the greatest loves of my life, showed the first glimpse that she gets it! It’s not about eggs or candy...jobs, dirty floors and Facebook. I can teach her to ride a bike, be kind to others and give to the SPCA – but when she learns to love God, my job as a mom, for me, is D.O.N.E. That’s it for me; to know that one day my child will be with me in Heaven worshiping at the feet of our Savior. So, at what point do we as adults lose that ‘matter of factness’ and instead focus on the things that don’t matter? Where is MY attitude of sheer joy in knowing that someone loved you so very much that He took your place, suffered an excruciating death when not only He didn’t deserve it, but no one could find any reason for killing Him?

So this Easter...forget about shaving your legs (wear pants please :) ), your new dress (if you’ve had time to get one) or the fact that you haven’t had a haircut in 2 months (hats are in, right?) or washed your car in 4 (cars are parked OUTSIDE the church)...come to Him as you are, flaws and all. He already paid the price; He already bought you your life back; He loved you before He created you. He doesn’t care what your floors look like, if your kids are wearing the latest trends, or if you shop at Whole Foods; He cares about your heart. He cares about ME and calls me His Beloved; He cares about YOU and calls you the apple of his eye...and yes, He loves my kids more than I do!

And those people that look like they’ve got it all together...do they really? Balancing is really an act after all...because I’m sure they’ve got a disorganized closet or crazy junk drawer at their house too. How do I know? Come on over to my pad, and I’ll show you...just don’t look at my floors...:)

My sessions on Saturday were WAY big on wind...and the sweetest little girls!

Madelynn...simply adorable! Such a pretty and sweet family to work with...I love it when a session just FEELS right and everything seems to go just as we wanted it to. Sometimes there can be alot of anxiety asociated with children's session because of how unpredictable they can be...smiles, behavior, non-stained clothing, even little face scratches or nose boogies! :) So sometimes I spend a little time reassuring them that everything is 'A-OK'. So here's to an awesomely patient mom and dad...see...it's all A-OK!

{ Hannah's Family }

I got to know the awesome Hannah last year as just a little baby...so when she WALKED up to me on Saturday, I almost couldn't believe it! She is one of the most beautiful and sweet little girls. Her big blue eyes, rosey cheeks and sweet expressions remind me of one of those little dolls I always wanted my uncle to win me on the Midway at the Fair...just THAT cute!

Now, I had the honor of meeting the great people responsible for mom and dad...the grandparents. I would like to have these four apply to be my surrogates, cause you can definitely tell who's the love of their lives...Miss Hannah! And, why not!?

Even after a windy relocation and some hair magic...this special family on this treasured occasion...they are still beautiful! Thank you for a great time and letting me be a part of your moment ~ D

{ Stages of Confidence }

WARNING, WARNING...This is a long one...look away if you dare, but read on if you like...

It's kind of a random title for a post, but let me explain...
Like most of you out there, I've got a lot going on - parenthood, wifehood, business ownerhood, renovating my hood... There used to be a time not so very long ago when I could stay up till 3am working on a college project or hanging out with friends, but these days getting up once for a 3am baby-feeding almost kills me - yes, and you too Jeremy. :) You all know what I'm talking about...my 20s was all about going full blast through my day on 2 hours of sleep and a tub 'o caffiene product and feeling the adrenaline rush...now in my (late) 30s, 2 hours of sleep means I get to a red light in Downtown Dallas and wonder how and when I got there cause I don't remember the entire drive...OR if I remembered to brush my teeth and put on deodorant before I walked out the door! (And hopefully the garage door is closed too...hmmmmm) Makes me wonder what the heck my 40s are gonna be like?!

With each year and with each stage in my life or experience I've encountered...I've changed. I've always been a cautious person; look both ways, check my mirrors, etc., but some things I've become less cautious about in life. Like what people think about me or speaking my mind or being more blogger-transparent. However, in some ways I've changed for the worse...like self-confidence. OK - this is not going to be a pity party, just a confession. Whenever you start something new and things aren't moving as quickly as you think they should...you start to think..."Hmmmmm, what's wrong with me?", "I must be doing something wrong.", "I thought I was more likeable." At least I do. Your confidence takes little hits here and there until pretty soon you realize you've got quite a lot of self-inflicted, Dana-sized, self-image dents.

That's where I am. I'm SO patient when shooting little bitty babies that won't sleep when those brand new parents want them to or with those adorable 2 year olds that have a hard time opening up because of their ingrained 'stranger-danger' phase...but I am so IMpatient when it comes to my own life! Good grief; I need to give myself a break!

So over the last week I really started to think about the word 'confidence'. What can I do to NOT let others, technology or situations intimidate me. After all, I'm really a pretty outgoing and funny person. Those who come in contact with me generally know in 5 minutes the true me - you can read it all over me in permanent marker so my mom says...AND that I like to laugh, joke, cut up...and yes, sometimes cry easily. So I think it all boils down to this stage in my life of starting a new business and being in a spot where I really haven't been before - unsure of myself as a professional and where exactly this road will take me. I know there are fellow photographers out there who know TONS more than me on the technology front, all the jargon and lingo, all of the connections and all about the best products and vendors. BUT, not all of them are me. I have alot to offer too - like a talent for seeing great images of people, families and kids and making them happen! I'm not successful 100% of the time, but I'm OK with that.

I saw a question this week on another blog: How much talent do you think has been wasted from a lack of confidence?

Dude! Good question! If it is something you feel you have the talent for; if it is something you really want to do; if it is something that makes you happy all the way down to your toes; if you feel it is your passion...why are you letting foolish ideas about yourself get in the way?!

One day my husband told me, ”I looked back at some of your images when you first got started and...blah, blah, blah...You’re a lot better now.”

Well, at first I was offended...you know, sometimes boys don’t express themselves well to hormonally induced, post-pardom, sleep-deprived mamas. So one day, in my secret place, accompanied by a large amount of chocolate and Dr Pepper to feed my sorrow...I discovered he was right! And it was a GOOD thing! It meant I had grown, learned and changed...for the better! I'm still learning every day. And when I make mistakes or don't quite get the picture I saw in my noggin...I give myself a break, chat up the mistake, try again and learn from it in the process. OK - maybe it's not that Dr. Phil-like for me ALL the time, and maybe I kick myself in the tukis a few times, but I know God gave me an eye for making people happy with my camera, and it's up to me to remember that God will bless me if I honor Him with my words and actions, trust Him with my business, give Him praise for the failures AND successes, and learn everything I can at this particular stage in my life...cause before you know it, this stage will be over and I'll be 40! CRUD...:)

So what's holding you back? I know what's held ME back...but tomorrow is another day!
And here's my beautiful Emma at her almost 4 year old, fighting the cheesy fake smile stage in life. We finally got past cheese and she gave me her best FIERCE...rawr!! Is she not the prettiest little girl you ever laid your peepers on?!

{ Q&A: Who do YOU read? }

So I kind of pride myself on being a 'Blog Stalker'...I know, I know, there's probably some Anon group for it, but I want no part of it! These are the people that inspire me, who I log on in the wee hours for or click on in between edits for a break...though they don't know it. Here's the who and the why...

Jasmine Star...I found her about a year ago, and I'm hooked! She is true, forthcoming, funny and an educator. She is what 'cool' wants to be and what 'hip' only dreams about. I know that whenever I read a post, I will laugh (at least once) outloud (probably spew something from my nasal cavity) and learn something about photography in the process.

Amy Wenzel and her husband, David Wenzel...When I read their blogs, my soul is uplifted. Their devotion, praise and honesty with and about Christ is where I want to be too. They are my daily slap in the face via God.

Zack Arias...His little video critique rants have literally made me cry-laugh - I still giggle about elbow boobies. If you haven't seen his critiques, I swear, you will laugh too. Plus, he makes me look at my images and go..."Hmmmmmm." (Then usually followed by..."CRUD!") :)

Crash Taylor...This is a site where photographers from literally all over the world post an image and tell you how they did it. OK, not that I'm going to take some rad and funky fashionista photo, but it's way cool to see what someone in Sweden is shooting! Right?

Jared Rey...This guy's on the local side, and I just love his style - funky, fresh and a little reminiscent. I also like the fact that he too shares his knowlegde with others...Not so we can copy, but so we can experiment! Love, love, love his Before & After segments...

Marie Q...On the really local side, I read her blog because I think her images are just pretty, soft and sweet. I'm sure I have just violated some form of ettiquette on complimenting the right-up-the-street competition, but it's already out there...so THERE! Plus, I don't like the word 'competition'...I prefer to think of it as healthy motivation! Who knows? Maybe one day we'll think of each other as professional friends...? :)

Caitie is so easy to work with, and I still love crusing through her engagement session for inspiration! The first image is my favorite and should be how I wish all brides to feel...and exactly how I felt on my wedding day...confident, pretty and laid back. It can be such an exciting, stressful and anxious time for everyone involved, but when it all comes right down to it; it's all little stuff, so don't sweat it! All that matters is the reason for which they will all gather in May...the celebration of two wonderful people and joy for their future together! Many Blessings to the future Mrs. Davis...:)

I'm always usually a bit anxious before I shoot a session primarily b/c I am SUCH a perfectionist...but I was WAY nervous for this one! Your Senior pictures are so important to you as a young person as you want it to capture yourself like YOU see you...and of course, we ALL see ourselves as cool, hip, young, handsome or pretty. Right? :)

Well, this young lady is all of the above, and I'm not biased just because she's related; I think her pictures prove it!

I sure wish Senior pictures like this were around when I graduated in...ahemmm...we won't go there...:)

Katie - I wish you many blessings in the road and choices ahead, and I hope you are thrilled with your images so far...even the 'serious face'. You did great! (PS - and so did mom and dad!) Love to you all! D :)

{ letting go }

I never expected that the past 8 weeks of maternity leave would teach me so much, but it all came together for me at a little 4yo’s birthday party at Chuck E Cheese…of all places!

If you haven’t been, you can count yourselves as one of the few (and maybe blessed) people to have never entered this childhood ‘paradise’. But Chuck E Cheese, even in all of its glory, can be slightly overwhelming, especially to the 3yo rookie. It is a virtual celebration of visual stimulation – the lights, the bells, the noises, the kids…and yes, the parents. Each adult trying to keep a visual reign on their kid ‘at all times’ is absolutely hysterical at times! You Chuck E veterans know what I'm talking about!

So when my Emma arrived at the party, I don’t think she really knew what to do with herself. After all, she had never experienced mayhem before. I could barely get her off of my leg. Even when she recognized her friends, it took much encouragement, prodding, hand-holding and bribery to get her to even sit at the table and eat! I began to feel anxious for her – I wanted her to have fun, but I knew I wouldn’t get her to let go if I didn’t make the adventure seem worthwhile. So I stayed with her. I kept telling her it would be OK; I kept telling her I didn’t want her to miss the fun; I even ate a piece of grody pizza to prove that she could do it - she could have fun. THEN…that life-sized darn mouse arrived, dancing around and acting well, pretty creepy...:) But, despite the mental 5-steps back damage that stinkin' rodent caused...once again, I encouraged. Eventually, she began to let herself go and not worry so much. Soon she was dancing up on the stage like a little super-freak with her friends. She opened up; she had fun; she played more and worried less.

That’s what I’ve learned in these 8 weeks – play more, worry less! Now, I’m not trying to use my blog to sound all preachy, but when you discover something and you feel led to share…you had better share it or as my aunt would say…”You just may be robbing someone of the blessing.” In this case, my sharing blesses me too as much as it may bless whoever reads my rantings...that’s why I’ve been sharing more.

There is a lot I could worry about this year. A baby who will be starting day care in 4 days…an almost 4yo who will start kindergarten before I know it…electrical and plumbing issues at home…hospital bills to be paid…and my business. AAAAHHHHH…the business. Beginning April 1 I will be going part-time at my ‘regular job’ in Dallas which will hopefully allow more options for me and my new venture. This is a huge step for me. I’m trying to learn how to market my fledgling business, I'm praying for business people and photography mentors who I can ask questions of, AND I'm trying to make sure I balance home and hobby. I’m praying a lot, crying a little (OK, maybe a lot) and trying my darndest to trust the Lord that I can help support my family with this talent because God cares about me and calls me His “Beloved”. I’m not sure how all of that will happen; I’m not sure of the exact game plan and sometimes I admit I feel unworthy...stepping out on faith when there are bills to pay is definitely not an easy thing for me to say or do. My dad recently told me, “If He gives you the talent He will give you the opportunity.” So at the moment I’m looking around like a hawk on the prowl for those opportunities…but most of all, I’m learning to let go.

Everyone starts off nervous and anxious, but after a bit, you settle in and enjoy the ride. Emma was scared in the beginning, just like I am at this moment, but by the end of the party she took hold of the reigns and yelled “Woo Hoooo”! Press Play :)

{ Mac - Part II }

I love the feeling B/W images convey...they remind me of looking through my Grandaddy's old photos from the 30s and 40s. I can look at them and just imagine the lives of the people in the image and what it must have been like to be...well, them! Sometimes they tell a story more than technicolor...:)

There's this funny thing about Newborn Sessions...no matter what happens, no matter how anxious the new parents are, no matter the baby...newborns are always perfect!
Their scent, their skin, their features...they are just the most amazing and beautiful creations.

Mac at 17 days is already all boy and simply wonderful...and he couldn't have asked for a better family! And as the first session since my own newborn...what a wonderful way for me to start off 2010 sessions.
It was, in a word...Perfect!

{ Band Aids & Bruises }

This post started out as a plug for how great canvases are since some clients had asked AND yes, it seems like quite an investment, so you want to make sure that you like what you get. Well, it IS a kudos for canvases, but this post also became a reflection on this image…

Penny was my husband's dog all throughout college at Texas A&M where we met and fell in love...but I probably dated him as much for his dog as his humor and good looks...:) I loved this little four-legged creature! If you knew her, she was absolutely unique! She was a pistol of personality and stubbornness...and I probably shouldn't mention that she loved chicken wings. But there is NO doubt that the thing that defined Penny the most was her bark...not really a bark, but a trill. It was the most unique thing I have ever heard, and I still can't describe it, but I can certainly still hear it. It was her voice and she used it the most when she was overcome with joy and excitement...and doggedness.

Then...Jeremy and I got married and we all joked that if the church would allow it, she would walk us down the aisle! Although the church was not so lucky as to get that opportunity, we DID move to Dallas where we both continued to work in veterinary medicine until life took Jeremy into research and me into motherhood.

With all of the joys that come with parenthood, Penny was a part of that joy - she was thrilled with Emma! Penny spent many sleepless nights with us as we paced the floor, and gave Emma spit baths when we weren’t looking…:) When Em began to crawl and walk, Penny was the ultimate in patience; she never put up a fight. Where some pets struggle with change and develop into behavioral nightmares, Penny loved her new role. Emma could pull her hair, squeeze her neck and lay on her like a hairy body pillow. She was our four-legged little mama.

So when we found out she had diabetes, we didn’t hesitate in treating her. She endured many pokes and proddings, injections and test, but she hung in there for over a year. Then cancer came… She was so stoic and took everything in stride. Over the next several weeks, we knew we would have to make a decision, but as long as she was comfortable for the moment, the decision seemed down the road instead of around the corner.

Then, on Sunday, July 5, 2008 I told Jeremy that instead of church that day, we were going on a play date. It was something I had been meaning to do, but just had never made the time…one of those ”I’ll do that next week.” kind of thing…ya know. So we all got dressed and took Penny and Emma to one of my favorite little spots in Downtown Waxahachie and as always, my camera came too. I didn’t know at the time how much it would mean to me, but looking back, it was one of my life’s top 10 moments. We all spent about 2 hours talking, playing and snapping magical photos.

Penny spent most of that afternoon in restless sleep and trying to get comfortable; that night wasn’t much better. By the time we got home Monday afternoon, she was struggling to walk and had no interest in food…which for Penny, was definitely a sign. After a long talk with a dear veterinarian and friend, we made the decision to say goodbye that night to our wonderful Penny. We were all heartbroken…even our extended family was devastated – she was after all, a member of our family.

I spent the next couple of days editing images from our last little play session together, and upon careful glance, I noticed all of the little scratches, bumps and bruises on Miss Emma. She was in the “I fall down for any and everything” phase, and I probably wouldn’t have held a session if I had been in my ‘right normal mind’. I would have waited for them to heal. Then I noticed something else…the Band Aids. Em was also going through a Band Aid phase. Even if there wasn’t a boo-boo, she had to wear Band Aids. It was just part of her accessorizing I guess. Sometimes 2, sometimes 20, but there was always a Band Aid on her somewhere! I thought about editing them out, and then I decided against it. The Band Aids were part of those little things that made the images so special to me and remembering them both, Penny and Emma, like they were on THAT day – unedited.

I didn’t know that we would be putting Penny to sleep the very next day, but if I had waited on Band Aids and bruises to mend, I would have missed the magic. So that’s how I want to live my life now, not caring about the little scratches and bumps…not waiting to lose that 10 extra pounds…not postponing something until my hair looks just right – all of those little imperfections are the stuff life is made of! And if we were all perfect, there would certainly be no need for Jesus and His salvation!

So – don’t wait, take out your camera, today, tomorrow…or have a session with me, with those you love…and snap away! Don’t spend life regretting that you missed the magic because of some little Band Aids!

When you have a baby born in May and then one in January...the hand-me-downs just don't jive! It's 30 degrees in Texas, granted tomorrow it may be 70, but for now all of those cute flip flops and halter tops from Miss Emma will remain boxed. :(
However, there's one second-hand dress that just begged to be set free from the moth balls! SO, with the thermostat set at 90 (which I'm SURE my wonderful husband will love to hear :)), I snapped a few in honor of the sweet dress from big sis...in her big girl room...on her big girl bed...
These images are the reason I love having baby sessions on their home turf; everyone is comfortable, the possibilities are endless and each and every session is unique!!!

{ Reminders }

When I have tough days as a mom...like today...I pray that the Lord reminds me of how I love to take naps on Sunday afternoons with my Emma...or how her hair smells like strawberries...or how her breathing is soft and small when she sleeps.
Help me remember all of the sweet things she says to me like "I love you so, so much!" and tells me how beautiful I am even when I don't feel like it.
Don't let me forget that she loves everything pink, princess, frilly and sparkly.
I hope my mind never loses the images of the funny expressions she makes when she doesn't understand one of my grandmother's sayings or thinks butternut squash tastes like posion.
She is the most beautiful, wonderful and sweetest thing in my life. Lord, help me remember...lest I forget...for time goes by too quickly...and they change so much...in the blink of an eye...and one day soon, I'm gonna miss those Sunday afternoon naps...

{ I can do everything... }

...through Him who gives me strength. Philippians 4:13

Written by a man who knew what it was like to be beaten, stoned, chained, hungry, outcast, persecuted and taken to the edge of town and left for dead...and yet he counted his chains as pure joy because he could testify about the One who gave him strength and salvation! That's my hope for this year...not for the stones and chains per se...but that when they come, I will count them as pure joy. That I will relish in the hard times and bathe in the learning. That like Paul, I can/will learn the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or want (Philippians 4:12b)...whether I am a frustrated mama or tired wife...whether I know the game plan or am totally clueless...whether I have a slow business day or have too many clients to count in one day! I will learn to be content and praise the chains because they are there for a reason.

This was a weekend of firsts ~ Emma went out for her first big girl bike ride in the park...screaming "WOO HOO...Come on Poppy...one more time!" She could have been afraid; she could have been hesitant; she wasn't...she was fearless! She can do ALL things! That's what I pray she remembers throughout her life...to be fearless in her faith and life!

It was also a weekend of firsts for Audrey ~ first bath, first Dr visit and first big church service. That's where I was reminded by our totally cool but balding pastor that I can do all things, and where I was reminded what I want to instill in my children, my marriage, my business and my life. I may not HAVE it all, but I can DO it all! :)

So this year many decisions lie ahead. Some things I already know the answers to, some I don't. What I do know is that God provides so much more abundantly than I could ever dream if I leave it completely up to Him. So that's what I'm doing! This year will be about expressing my faith more...on this blog, in my photography, with my family and with my whole being. It will be about trusting more and second-guessing less; giving back to my family and the community; worrying more what God thinks about things than what others may think about me.

The desire of my heart for 2010 is that I grow and learn by leaps and bounds through my photography and that God will flourish my business and people will be blessed! I hope you will be a part of it...join me on the journey!

So no matter your struggle today...job, home, health...know that YOU can do all things!

Audrey Jane...I can't believe she's here already...it is all so surreal...the entire pregnancy is all a blur in the rearview and many joys and challenges lie ahead, BUT one thing I CAN believe in is how blessed I am ~ Blessed to have a family that loves and prayes for me and my family daily...blessed to have been bonded for life with an awesome partner, friend and father...blessed to have the smartest and most precious 3 yr old E.V.E.R....and blessed again with my little Audrey.

My worries about how can you love the second child as much as you love the first were all washed away in one glance - your heart automatically leaps and expands beyond your comprehension; it is utterly inexplicable! I am sure within my heart of hearts it is the perfect example of how God can love ALL of His sheep equally and not one more than the other. What an awesome and overwhelming feeling!

Now that's not to say that I don't worry for each of my girl's safety every day - or for their health, well-being, happiness, self-esteem, etc. etc. etc. or that Emma knows that I love and adore her as much as Audrey and vice versa...I wouldn't be a good mom if I didn't, but like the old song says...

How sweet to hold a newborn baby,
And feel the pride and joy he gives.
But greater still the calm assurance,
This child can face uncertain days because He lives.

Because He lives, I can face tomorrow.
Because He lives, All fear is gone.
Because I know He holds the future,
And life is worth the living just because He lives.

I want to shout it from the hills...Thanks be to God! I am so blessed!

{ Tick Check! }

It's been FOREVER since we've had pictures of my own family taken...usually it's some version of 2 of us instead of all 3 of us...so when I decided that FOREVER was just too long and we were going to head to our local park and take pictures before the new mini Perkins arrived, I NEVER guessed that 40 degree weather was still prime time for TICKS! Arrrrggggggg....
Yes, ticks!

We had almost finished the session because our photographer (ME)...was pooped from running back and forth to set the timer on the camera...when all of a sudden, as my awesome husband was trying to take a rare picture of me, I looked down, freaked out, and all I could say was "Tick, tick, tick...waaaaahhhhh"

OK - I was a veterniary nurse for 16 years, and these are the kinds of little parasites I had developed a 'thick skin' for...but when you are pregnant, the only thing you think is...BLOOD SUCKING DISEASE!!! So after J firmed up his grip on the camera, calmed me down, threw the tick to infinity...I proceeded to tick check everyone and everything! If I myself could have stripped down to nothing and harmed none of the passers by's eyes...I would have, but I didn't want to subject poor souls to that preggo horror just before dinner. So, even though I still at times have flashbacks and can feel ticks creeping all over me, AND I just know I've brought them home and they are waiting to perpetrate their nastiness when I least expect it...I will remain calm...with my tweasers and a Red Bull in the wings!

PS - My husband thinks its hysterical that my new ring tone for his phone is "I'd Like to Check You for Ticks" (Brad Paisley)...he's SUCH a comedian! Instead of making jokes, I think he should talk to Santa about getting me a wireless remote so I can ditch the timer thingy! What do you think? :)

We had to ditch our fam pics yesterday cause the weather was just too...well, Texas...:) So, you know kids...after mentioning 'pictures on Saturday' all week to Emma...she just didn't want to let the idea go! At 9pm last night, after pizza, Rudolph...and a bath to wash off the kid-germs...we went into the Studio Room last night and I caught THIS!

It says so much about little kids at Christmas...wonder, amazement, belief, curiosity. It's definitely one of my Em Favs...whadaya think?!

{ Is it the end already...? }

Well, it's officially the end of the Tin Star 2009 Sessions...thanks to a wonderful kung-fu kickin' baby on the way in about 4 weeks! It's such a cliche...BUT I REALLY can't believe how fast the year has flown...it seems like just the other day that we were celebrating the LAST New Year!

This 2009 journey has been an incredible one - the wonderful people I've met and worked with, the lessons learned (on the home front & on the 2-jobs front), officially becoming a wigged-out small business owner in February, TOTAL infertility stress and learning to balance life in general, yeah right! You know what I'm talking about...awesome wife, old mom-new mom syndrom, 2-job working, exhausted, perfectionism driven chick that I am ...and yes, even relearning how to shave my legs and paint my toenails at 8 mos of pregnancy...:) It's all a journey for which I am thankful...except the shaving part!

God has blessed my family and our business SO much this year because of each person that has placed their trust and recommendations in my little venture...you are appreciated, and I am stoked! I have so many ideas to give back...to you, the community and my family, and would love to partner with people who have the same God-born vision...call, email, write, jet-plane...whatever; let me know...I'm not kidding! :)

So I KNOW there will be many more pictures to share before the official end of 2009...including my 2009 Favs List...but for now, I'll leave you with some of my favorite images from my last session of the year...the beautiful Hunt Family!

{ 1 Year Session...The Wounded Warrior }

I have had injuries at sessions before, but they have all pertained to ME! This wonderful, adorable little guy met the gravel on a personal level yesterday, and he had the facial road rash to prove it...although you would never be able to tell it due to Photoshop...AND his AWESOME attitude! The image with the #1 was right after the infamous tumble!
And a personal thanks to mom and dad for braving it out as well; I definitely know what it's like to have an injured little one...and still 'go on' - you were wonderful...and I still feel horrible! I hope he's much better after the wear and that preview is a 'treat' instead of a vision of the fall - and I hope you're willing to come and see me again! Enjoy, D

In this case...anywhere with little Reed! He is so cute, so much fun and one ball of marathon walking energy! There is absolutely no need for me to exercise during pregnancy when I've got kiddos like this one to 'shoot' on the weekends! This session in one word...F.U.N. Love this session and this great family!

I had the pleasure of hosting the Glenn Family from Dallas again for their fall family session in my hometown of Waxahachie this Saturday! Beautifully cloudy day (perfect for a session)...but I was completely unaware that a WWII battle re-enactment was in the works as well! So amidst the German gunfire, the Russians mobilizing and the Americans preparing their surprise attack...we managed to make it out alive...and with these great images! { Ragan ~ 3 Weeks }

This beautiful little girl is the newest addition to Mr. Nathaniel and Ms. Courtney...Em's teacher, mentor, encourager and kicker in the butter at the Shepherd's School in Dallas (The AWESOMEST school ever, btw...)! So when she asked me to be the first to take her professional pics, I dropped everything! I didn't care how pregnant I am, or how hard it is to move around with each passing day...I was and am honored to be able to be a part of this special day! This little guy is the 10th...yes, 10th...great-grandbaby in my husband Jeremy's family, and he's just beautiful! I snuck a few poses and pictures this weekend when we went for our R&R visit before our own little one arrives, and I just couldn't wait, so I had to post at least ONE ~ so without further adieu; Introducing Ryder Quay Russell, 4 days old...and the youngest little newborn creature I've ever gotten to shoot! :)

This weekend was packed with 3 big sessions / 2 Saturday and 1 Sunday (preview coming tomorrow)...in between fighting some little stomach bug ~ ICK! If and when you get notification...Please remember that the sessions slots listed are a bit more limited than I normally offer due to my pregnancy, doctors orders...and ginormousness :)! I would be SO happy to work with each of you if I can, but if it doesn't work, I understand that too...I hope to be able to work with you in the future! So, just let me know...

I am bummed to announce that my poor sessions were rained out Saturday, so this coming weekend will be busy, busy, busy! And since I don't have any previews to post, I thought I would take just a brief business blog time-out...

The baby's room is now gutted, thanks to the super industrious (and now REALLY sore) J on Saturday. And when I say gutted, that's what I mean...no carpet, no popcorn ceilings, no trim, no nothing! It's a designers dream pallet! Rennovations will begin soon and before/after pics are a must...including images of Emma's new princess haven!

However, before proceeding further on all of those little details that in the end don't really matter much to a newborn...she must have an identity other than "It's a Girl Perkins." Baby Perkins #2, who will make her debut on or somewhere around January 16, 2010 (Lord and mama willing) will now be known as...

Story behind the story: Both J and I are very traditional people, but these names weren't chosen because they were 'in the family' since Ellis Island ~ J chose 'Audrey' (as in Hepburn)...and I chose 'Jane' (as in Austen) who is the classic author of one of my favorite books "Emma"...go figure...;) (The image above is also just a hint of the baby's beautiful 'south wing' of the once again demolished Perkins house!)

That's how I feel today...full of so many blessings...I can't list them all, so just a few...
FIRST ~ We had our 6mo preggo prodding on Wednesday, and all is good! Gestational Diabetes test = done (waiting on results)...Baby's name = done (announcement coming soon)...Baby's room = ummmm, well, that's another story but I still feel blessed! Emma is handling things so well which always tugs at my heart ~ she's my first, I always want her to feel as special as number two, and this experience reminds me to make sure I take time out for each of them! I am thankful!

SECOND ~ Thank you so much to each of you who have scheduled sessions, who are on waiting lists, who recommend me to your friends and families, and who understand the possibility of waiting for me until Spring...and choose to hang on anyway AND offer encouragement at the same time! I am thankful!

THIRD ~ There are so many ideas I have for the future of Tin Star: a better more flexible schedule to offer YOU more options, wonderful gift ideas for family and friends, custom photo cards, new logo/branding...but it's all about YOU! Just yesterday I had a brand new client email me with some ideas on a special collection for babies through the first year, and we are going to work together to come up with something special that other clients can take advantage of too! I haven't even met her yet, and already I am excited about this creative future client! I am thankful!

FOURTH ~ If you are one of those creative people, and you have ideas you would like to share, I encourage you to do so...EMAIL! Whether you have a business of your own like custom card designs or create props that can be used for photographers, or you're like Amy...you know what you like, but I don't offer it yet...ASK! I love other creative people and would LOVE to give you a buzz on my blog, work with you and promote you ~ after all, YOU promote ME and my flegling business too! I am thankful!

Second session of the weekend, and fast and furious doesn't even begin to describe this session because I have never experienced mosquitos like we did this evening! Holey Moley! Thankfully Paige saved the day and found her anti-venom in the car...:)

Other than that the session was superb, AND I got my second dose this weekend of an almost 2 year old who was more than happy to tell me "No"...good thing I'm a push over for big baby blues ~ just like yesterday's session (below) I take one look at this cutie through my lens, and "No" doesn't even matter! Well, this day couldn't BE more fabulous cause I LOVE this part of what I do...remind me WHY I don't do this full-time yet???

I met the beautiful Ballard Family at my all-time favorite place to shoot...The Dallas Arboretum...for my all-time favorite time of the year...Autumn! And we were blessed with awesome pumpkins, WONDERFUL weather and the cutest curley top little girl with more expressions than I have seen on one face in a long time! And to top it all off...this is the first day in 5 days that my ankles aren't swollen ~ Can this day GET any better?! :)

Baby Ryder at 3 weeks...and a premie at that...had a bit of a rough tummy day today, but you would never be able to tell it from the images! I know we didn't get near as many shots as everyone so desperately wanted, but I hope mom and dad are reassured with the few I posted for their preview. It's funny, I say it all the time, but Newborn Sessions are SO very different than any other session I do - longer, more tiring, more fun and ALWAYS about the baby. They are in control of the parents, the photographer, the time and what we do and don't get to do at their session. I sure hope I get to see this little one again, cause I've got a lot more images in store for him...:)

PS ~ I also don't normally post almost everything in black and white...but the feeling of B/W matches the feeling of the images so well...it just commanded that I do it! :)

You know, there are many things that run through your mind in those moments that lead up to the birth of your child...one of the most life changing moments is the power of technology! Oh I know, I know, some people choose not to find out...or if you're like my mom's generation, didn't have the opportunity...and some would like to actually pre-determine the gender if they could, I think...but J and I have always been of the thought that we didn't care one way or another what is was, and we won't keep 'trying' for another just because we want something different! If God saw it in His plan to give us this child, who are we to determine the outcome or gender for that matter...but it sure is fun to be in that sonogram room and wait for the words "OK kids, you want to know?"

I'm a 'planner'...so it is in my makeup to want my so-called ducks in a row...and finding out the gender sure does help me decide; Do I need to have another Pre-Baby Garage Sale? Should I go ahead and take out another 'wedding loan'? Should I plan for sky-rocketing car insurance? These are the kinds of things that keep me up at night...along with indigestion!

We've waited and prayed for this child for so long and have been through so many tests and medications that the whole pregnancy thing has been a little surreal...until yesterday. Miss Emma accompanied us to our appointment so she can feel like she has SOME control and participation in the soon-to-be chaos, and even though she lost interest almost immediately after finding out...and thought ALL of the women in the waiting room were there to get their hair cut (too funny!)...I'm so happy to announce that Miss Emma will have a BABY SISTER to call her own!

SO, in the parting words of Mis Em (because she came, she found out, she was done)..."OK dad, It's a girl...Let's get outta' here!" :)

He is exactly why I stress that it is important to have Newborn Sessions when little ones are less than 2 weeks. They sleep better ~ They bend/position better ~ plus since they are so tiny...they fit great with all of those props! Here are just a few of the beautiful Eli...

Mr Jacob came to see me for his one year session at one of my very favorite places to shoot - Lakeside Park. AND...the lake is actually a lake again after months of construction..just in time for Fall sessions; I'm SO excited! To Emma: When you look back on My Mommy Journal and you see that I missed a day here and there…don’t be upset, your life is well documented in word and in image. You are a part of me and the reason I love photography, so I will cherish your life here too ~ This is my heart in word to you…

I received an email from your teacher, Ms. Courtney, last night about the way you light up her Tuesday/Thursday class and what a joy you were to her…so I thought I would write you a little note to tell you what a joy you are to me! I know I tell you all the time, but sometimes it doesn’t seem like it’s enough.

You are so smart and pretty and witty and funny! Your logic and thought astounds me, and your stubbornness makes me laugh…sometimes…:) You’ve grown into such an amazing little lady already, and your Poppy and I are so proud of the wonderful person you are becoming.

There will definitely be those days in your life when you will ‘hate’ mom and dad and take joy in testing our direction. There will even be times when we ourselves are sure we are horrendous parents; but for now we delight in the moments when you call out to one of us from the other room just to say “I love you SO, SO much!” or when you run into the room and say “Can I give you a kiss?” and when you try so clandestinely to squeeze between us in bed and then quietly ask one of us to "Move over..." :)

I want you to know that you are passionately prayed for each and every day – for safety and protection in this crazy jungle of life; for continued nurturing and encouragement by people who love you, for wisdom and peace in the challenges that are sure to come your way…but most of all, for you to know with all of your heart how truly special you are to me and Poppy, but amazingly and even more special to the One who created you and blessed our lives with you. J and I made the jaunt to Ft Worth this weekend for the wonderful Elms family! The light was beautiful on Saturday morning at the Botanic Gardens...and not too hot; Thank the Lord! The first image with little Miss K is my favorite, it is such a good representation of childhood personalities; independant, no pretense, could care less if I was there...just plain kiddo goodness!

PS ~ I found out (after the fact) that there is now a $25-$75/hr fee to shoot at the FREE Botanic Gardens!!! HOLY CANNOLI!!! I cannot in good conscious reasonably pass on that fee to clients, especially since my whole purpose is to dedicate my work to people who desire really great images at a price normal people can afford. SO, unless you are just gonna DIE or your mama is gonna disown you if you don't have your session there...this may very well have been my Farewell Session...:)

I'm cutting it close on time for this preview...but the weekend dedicated to my little Emma was so worth it, more on that later... Now on with the Rowe family ~ they're just plain sweet, kind and considerate, there's no other way to slice it! And that little Hannah is BEAUTIFUL ~ She is one of the most easy going babies I have ever encountered! I also can't decide which is my weekly favorite...the gummy smile, the RR tracks or her with papa...hmmmm, I don't think it matters. :)

The tiniest faces are the ones I love the best...uninhibited, completely natural and really have no interest in me or my Canon. These are 2 images from my recently posted final images ~ Andy, the future pirate?; Abigail, not thrilled about being naked...again...:) And, mind you, these just happen to be images with daddy and bear NO representation whatsoever of how they really feel about their wonderful papas!

~ Hot Sessions; Cool Families ~

OK - so I am about done with this heat...J told me today, if we are on track for the hottest Summer, I hope we're also on track for the coldest Winter! At this point, I am definitely inclined to agree... Thank goodness my poor clients haven't melted or stroked out yet...;) If you have a session coming up...BRING THE H2O! However, I do love the fact that I have had alot of sessions in Waxahachie lately; I love finding new little neat places to shoot...

On with the previews! The first cool family on a hot day was with my friend Sarah and her crew...you might remember little Luke from his Newborn Session several weeks ago. I can't believe how MUCH he has grown, you'd never know he had major heart surgery a couple of weeks ago! Beautiful family and a joy to work with! And little Miss Hannah...The only way to catch a semi-still image of this little walking machine is an arm swing...or to have the entire family shout her name all at once, jump up and down and make absurd faces...I loved it! (And the first image is my favorite...simply beautiful sisters!) :)

As I sift through and edit the 100s of images from my sessions, I realized that there are those pictures that you blogaholics may never see because I always try to post previews of the best overall representation of the session/person...and, yes me. BUT sometimes the best images of the true person is snapped when you/they least expect it. They are images of definite personalities and not something your family might hang over the mantel...or maybe you might?

I decided to create this new series { Faces of...} on my blog because I read a quote on another blog today of someone who had a session with a terminally ill client...that they walked into their living room and saw pictures of him through his entire lifetime and felt like she already knew him even though she only knew him for a moment. Hopefully the images I take of my clients will represent the same and let others who come into your home know you... These are the pictures that make me smile, laugh...and say awwwww! I love photographs!

I'm not sure who is to 'blame', but I can honestly say I am completely stoked, honored, humbled, baffeled and a gammet of other emotions (although some could be related to pregnancy, which could explain the weird peanut butter craving I've had lately esp. since I HATE PB!). See as a photographer, you want to come across as awesomely confident, but inside you're always striving for approval and perfection...both of which I struggle with on a minutely (is that a word) basis.

So for today, I will take that God induced kick to the behind...put aside those feelings of unworthiness...and focus on working my flegling business into my one day full-time passion! Andy at 3 weeks just could barely stand to fall asleep in the event that he might miss something! So cute, strong and already thinks he's Mr. Independent - not including feeding, snuggling, etc...:) The Andy / Mom image is my weekly favorite...AND - I'm SO diggin' my grey backdrop! Thanks mom and dad for taking time with me and being so patient; I enjoyed the session!

My Saturday also included this beautiful family and the prettiest blue-eyed baby from Dallas. Can you tell we were all about to melt...even at 8:30 in the morning? But I think everyone looks pretty darn great; Not a perspiration drop in sight. This heat is crazy, right!?...but hold your breath folks, there's a cold front moving in today! :)

OK - this weekend was (and is) really jam-packed for me...sessions + Father's Day + demolishing our house (yet again) + preparing for another addition to our family. I know it's early, but we're almost through the first trimester, and it will only get busier from here, right? And I know I have a couple of people waiting on proof CDs and final images ~ hang in there ~ I promise I'm trying to catch up! :)

All of my sessions this weekend had some of my favorite images to date so far! The first of 3 was with my absolute favorite redheads all the way from Ft Worth! They are so photogenic and the best people to shoot! So, hang on to your preview hats...here we go...

My last session this weekend was not short on numbers or fun...the first picture is what the entire hour was like...full of laughter! I could only choose a few images for the preview since there were so many poses...so the Solanos will just have to trust me on the rest...coming soon...:)
